the 'can-o-worms' called good salvage yard deals

We decided to go to the salvage yard (http://http//www.driftwoodsalvage.com/) when they told us in a rather hillarious, angry email about their struggle with the City of Palo Alto over their completely over-stocked grounds (doors and windows and reclaimed redwood siding as far as you could see). They said they needed to get rid of everything, and advertised the pile-o-kindling as half off! We went simply to "see what they had".....and for just over $200, we came home with....
.....a door for the kitchen ($75 - no jambs)
...and a sliding door to replace the double window
in the middle bedroom ($150).
The very first time we
walked thru the house, we talked about
putting a door out of the middle bedroom.
Unfortunately, nothing is as simple as just switching out a door.
We decided, "since you're in there anyway", why not take out that
little kitchen window. There's plenty of light thru the new full glass door,
and so that "when we redo the kitchen" (spoken like a true 'superviser') .....
we would then be able to put an upper cabinet all the the way to the wall,
instead of the wasted half-round shelves we currently have.

of course, the paint on the west side of the house was
so weathered and so bad, I decided I needed to
scrape the house like a methhead for 4 days in a row.
Exhausting that fun, I decided I would save time and just pull this bad old
bathroom window patch out, and replace with new redwood siding.
Oh...and that bathroom window looks like garbage,
"you should change that since you're in there anyway..."

Apparently, finding 10" redwood siding isn't that easy.
(Proven by our neighbor who had an unfortunate BBQ accident,
and now, an awful mismatched patch job).
But alas, our trusty salvage yard had salvaged redwood planks...
and of course, they too were on sale!
($1.35 l/f, compared to the $5.99 l/f quotes I had gotten)

My new 'Stars and Stripes Forever' themed house....
New trim and flashing all around, and now just to caulk, prime and paint.
Tired of scraping paint and caulking, for only the 2nd...or maybe 3rd time,
I enlisted the help of someone else (besides B) to help me in my home
remodel endeavers.
My buddy Danny took the time away from his busy schedule of running.....
and running.... to help me demo the wall and lift the heavy beast into place.

It went in real easy.

Looks like Reef's looking for a stair...
back to work.

*UPDATE*
aforementioned stair.

I am impressed. I wouldn't have the fukking patients to complete a project like that... :)

I actually really enjoy doing the work...well, except painting. Oh, and caulking...caulking really sucks.
Funny enough, I landed a carpentry job building custom sauna's and wine cellars.
You're waaay more into weather than I ever could be, so I guess that's what makes us special in our own way.
;)
